Family Mediation

What is family mediation?

Family mediation is a non-court dispute resolution that can help resolve family issues quickly.

If you have decided to divorce or separate, mediation provides a practical way to move forward, helping you to reach an agreement in a safe, structured environment.

The Family Mediation Hub also provides support for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who may be struggling to negotiate complex issues within their family after separation.

How long does mediation take?

Each mediation session lasts about 90 minutes and will be co-mediated by Katy and Pam.

On average, we hope to help you reach an agreement in three to five sessions. This tends to vary slightly, depending on the complexity of your situation.

What types of mediation are there?

We know everyone’s circumstances are different, so we offer a range of mediation types.

  • In person mediation – this is where we meet in person and mediate around a table or between different rooms
  • Online – we use Zoom for our online clients
  • Shuttle mediation – this is an alternative option for those who don’t want to be in the same room or on the same screen

The four principles of mediation

  • Mediation is voluntary - because of this, most clients attend mediation with a mindset that’s open to reaching a resolution
  • Mediation is confidential - agreements reached in mediation can’t be used by clients or solicitors in legal proceedings
  • Mediators are impartial and don’t take sides
  • The outcome is yours to decide – a mediator’s role is to support you to reach an agreement. We’ll facilitate and support, but we won’t make decisions for you
